We Have Your Labor BBQ Plans All Right Here

Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day! We are a little embarrassed, but we actually did not know the exact reason we celebrate Labor Day. We did a little google search. Just sharing it here in case anyone else out there wanted to avoid a blank stare whenever their child asks them about the holiday.

Labor Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States.

It's also one of the top 3 days for grilling in America. This means that grilling on a federal holiday like Labor Day may actually be necessary and patriotic.

We are here with a few Grilling Menu Ideas and things you can take in case anyone gives you a last minute invite to their pool.

We hope you are each surviving the Back to School wave and that September brings you everything you dream of.

Feel free to mix and match these menus to include what you like. We always recommend supplementing with some store bought appetizers or sides. Use the days leading up to the holiday to lessen the prep load. Marinate recipes like the fried chicken or the wings, pre-make sauces and dressings like our Guava BBQ Sauce and Olive Salsa Verde for topping anything that is on the grill. Some recipes taste better when they sit a few days like Black bean dip, Mango Salsa, Tomato salsa. Most of our desserts can be made ahead and really do taste better once they’ve had a chance to setup in the fridge like our No bake key lime pie, Granizado de Mango, Passion Fruit Mousse, Chocolate Brigadeiros and arroz con leche.

If you've been here for a while, you know- Thanksgiving is one of our absolute favorite days of the year! We think hosting it is a badge of honor. What a wonderful blessing to be able to gather and host a meal for your favorite people on a day dedicated to gratitude. However we know that this "blessing" does not come easily, and that there is a lot of work and sacrifice that goes into a hosting a night like this. One of our goals here at Abuela's Counter is demystifying the urban legends of...

Hispanic Heritage Month is Here While we think Hispanic Heritage is something that should be celebrated year round. Over the last couple of years, we have taken Hispanic Heritage Month as a time to reflect on other cultures outside of our own, Cuban. It’s been a pleasure to dive into their ingredients and ways of tying food together that both is so similar to what we know and also has a subtle difference that sets it apart. It’s been an incredible journey to find the overlap between cultures....
